TheatreMachine Investigates : Taboos And Morality At Theatre/Theater

TheatreMachine presents the premiere of Cybele May's The Parking Lot Plays at Theatre/Theater opening Sat., Jan. 4, under Heidi Rose Robbins' direction. A collection of six plays set in a parking lot, The Parking Lot Plays; "A Grave Mistake", "Demise", "Digital Revolution", "Family Affair", "Four May", and "Tough Love", all deal with taboos ranging from desecration of the dead, to incest, to cloning, and the issues of faith and morality that they raise. Jeff Murray produces.

Playwright Cybele May is a recipient of the Christina Crawford Award for her play Dialing for Dads. Her plays The Last Gasp was produced by North Hollywood's Interact Co. as well as The Intercession which Women in Theatre also produced at the Ventura Court Theatre. A Grave Mistake was produced as a critically acclaimed short film by Atom Films. Her play The Redeemer is slated for publication by Playscripts, Inc. in Feb. of 2003. Ms. May currently serves as Literary Associate of the Ojai Playwrights Conference.

Director Heidi Rose Robbins is the former Director of Shakespeare for the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Norfolk, Virginia where she was also Artist-in-Residence at Governor's School for the Arts. She recently developed and directed a trilogy of plays with the new Troubadours Theater in Boulder, Colorado. Additionally she has co-written and directed Baring Fruit, a one-woman show about the painter Paula Modersohn-Becker.

Two casts will perform The Parking Lot Plays. Performing Thurs. and Fri. will be Christine Avila, Caroline Carrigan, Scott Jay, Gergana Mellin, A.J. Schuermann, James Sharpe, and Anne Rutter. Performing Sat. and Sun. will be Michelle Allen, Christine Avila, Nicolette Chaffey, Chris Johnston, Gergana Mellin, Jeff Murray, and Matt Skaja.

A Grave Mistake

Caroline Carrigan, A. J. Schuermann and James Sharpe perform in A Grave Mistake on Thursdays and Fridays.


Mark Worthington designs sets, Emanuel Treeson designs lights, Charlene McCabe costumes, and Drew Dalzell designs sound.

The Parking Lot Plays perform Thurs., Fri., and Sat. at 8:00 PM, and Sun. at 2:00 PM, through Feb. 9. Theatre/Theater is located on the 4th Floor of 6425 Hollywood Blvd, (between Cahuenga and Wilcox), in Hollywood. Tickets are $15. For reservations call 323 871-9433.
